Renting from a private landlord
-
Renting from a private landlord is when you live in a property owned by an individual person or a company.
-
You do not need to be on the Housing Register (Devon Home Choice) to rent privately.
-
- You can find properties to rent from private landlords in these ways;
-
- Through an estate agent.
-
- Direct with the landlord through adverts in the local papers or shops.
-
- By word of mouth – speaking to someone you know.
-
The cost of renting from a private landlord can cost you more money and you may have to ‘top-up’ your rent. It may be harder to get help with repairs to your home.
-
Some private landlords will not allow people on benefits to rent their property.
